Pinna nobilis, the largest bivalve in the Mediterranean, is facing a critical risk of extinction due to a widespread disease. The last living and healthy individuals in the basin are found in high densities in the Sea of Marmara. However, the existing stocks are being destroyed due to human activities.

Purpose and Objectives

The goal of the project is to monitor the resident Pinna nobilis stocks in the Sea of Marmara despite mass mortality events, develop conservation strategies, and raise awareness to ensure the protection of Pinna. This effort aims to contribute to the restoration of the Sea of Marmara, which has been damaged by mucilage, while ensuring the sustainable conservation of Pinna, whose last refuge is the Sea of Marmara.

Work Packages

The project includes identifying the current status of Pinna nobilis populations in the Sea of Marmara, developing conservation strategies, and working towards increasing sustainable environmental awareness. Outreach activities aim to raise awareness about the species and include citizen science initiatives for monitoring the species.
